April 1870 –10.46m; April 25, 1931 – 9.6m; April 19, 1946 – 9.45m.
Since 1843, all Maitland floods have been well reported by the Mercury and so it was in 1931.
Reading through all that reporting, amidst the usual flood stories, one sprang out as very familiar to last week’s coverage of now called Gillieston Heights.
EAST GRETA RELIEF. Through the assistance of Mr JE Chant, the Government Food Relief Officer for Maitland, Mr NP Olson, was today able to continue the distribution, of relief at East Greta, despite the flood.
Mr Chant placed his lorry at the disposal of the council and one of the flood boats was conveyed to Regent Street and launched. Mr Olson was thus able to visit East Greta and distribute relief.
