Maitland’s premier greyhound venue looks more like a BMX track than a race course one week on from the super storm that hit the Hunter.

The normally flat sand-based surface has been destroyed with ferocious flooding creating ankle-high contours at the finish line, down the home straight and around both bends.
In some parts, the track has been stripped back to its foundation, with gravel and plastic underlay exposed.
Much of the sand has been swept inside the Maitland Showground track and has clogged overflowing drains.
The 16 power boxes next to the light poles on the inside of the track were completed covered in water for several days and have yet to be turned on.
The power boxes control the timing devices and starting boxes and electricians have been called in to assess the damage.
Fencing rails have also been knocked down.
Maitland Greyhound Club sponsorship and promotions manager Fred Robertson said the damage was unprecedented.
“This is the worst I have ever seen it,” Robertson said. “It was the worst I have ever seen it rain.”
The storm occurred just a few days after the club hosted its feature race – the $40,000 Gold Cup.
The damage forced the cancellation of last Thursday’s meeting.
There will be no racing at Maitland this week.
Wednesday’s card has been postponed until May 20 and Thursday’s event transferred to Gosford.
The club hopes to race again next Thursday, May 7, but this will depend on the progress of repairs.
“We are definitely out of play this week,” Robertson said. “Hopefully we can get back on next week, but we will just have to wait and see.
“Electricians are coming in this week some time and the track will have to be completely redone again, which means levelling it out and getting more sand in.”
The Hotel Challenge set down for Thursday at Maitland has been put back until June 25.
