Three days of continuous rain forced officials to postpone many fixtures on Saturday and Sunday after events last weekend had been severely affected by the April 21 super storm.
The Maitland Saints, the Maitland Magpies, the Maitland Pickers and the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs all had the weekend off, along with the city’s netballers.
The Maitland Saints were to play Black Diamond AFL matches at home at Max McMahon Oval on Saturday, but both first and second division sides were washed out against Lake Macquarie and Nelson Bay respectively.
The first game for the Saints women was also cancelled because of the weather conditions.
The Maitland Magpies now have two matches to catch up after their Northern NSW Football National Premier League fixture against Edgeworth at Jack McLaughlin Oval was called off on Friday.
The Magpies are already scheduled to play Newcastle Jets Youth at Cooks Square Park this Tuesday after missing out Anzac weekend.
In the Newcastle Rugby League, the Maitland Pickers and Kurri Kurri Bulldogs games were washed out.
The Pickers game against South Newcastle at Townson Oval on Sunday was cancelled on Friday after Newcastle City Council kept a blanket closure on all of its grounds.
The Bulldogs were up against Macquarie at Lyall Peacock Field on Saturday and the clash was called off that morning.
Both fixtures have been rescheduled for the weekend of May 23 and 24.
Maitland Netball Association decided to postpone Saturday’s start to the season for multiple safety reasons, including damage to the club rooms and canteen at their Maitland Park headquarters.
The association’s management committee also decided not to play this Saturday, which coincides with music festival Groovin the Moo at Maitland Showground.
The 2015 season will now begin with round three on May 16.
Round 1 has been shifted to July 4 and round 2 will now be played on August 2.
Maitland City Council had reopened most grounds by the end of last week, but individual user groups were still required to undergo a wet weather assessment before playing on the weekend.
Facilities at Thornton No.1, Tenambit No.1, Smyth Field, Maitland Sportsground No.2 and Norm Chapman Oval remained closed as of Friday for safety reasons.
