However, Marcellin Park was open for business at Lorn on Saturday with seven Newcastle and Hunter Junior Rugby Union matches being played, along with the Maitland Blacks’ under-7 program.
“It was fantastic for the boys,” Blacks veteran Matt Parkinson said.
“A lot of them haven’t had a run in four weeks with school holidays and all the wet weather.
“One of them actually arrived at 7.30 in the morning, an hour before kick off, because he was that keen.”
The Blacks won five of the fixtures played on Saturday, including the first of this season’s Burgess-Valentine Cup fixtures against rivals Singleton.
Maitland accounted for Nelson Bay (under 8s), Singleton (under 9s), Pokolbin (under 12s) and Merewether Carlton (under 14s) in the fourth round games.
A pair of Blacks sides faced off in the under 10s.
The hosts were beaten by Nelson Bay (under 15s) and Merewether Carlton (under 18s).
A total of 65 under-7 players also turned up to Marcellin Park on Saturday morning.
