The cafe has won the hospitality category of the Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards for the past three years and owner Gary Peapell said the wins have been both marks of success and sources of inspiration for the business.
Mr Peapell said his hard-working staff worked with a sense of pride and confidence since winning the awards.
“We opened in 2011 and received an honourable mention that year, and we’ve won every year since then,” he said.
Mr Peapell said the awards solidified his vision as a small business owner.
“The staff are very proud of the awards and were disappointed when they didn’t get to go to the ceremony themselves last year.”
Organiser Kerry Hallett said the awards offered an opportunity for businesses to critically examine their operations, look back on their history and plan for the future.
“We’ve had businesses say that because they’ve won awards they are taken more seriously,” Mrs Hallet said.
“Their prices are unquestioned, their services are valued.
“It’s validation that the business is a genuine and valuable business,” she said.
The awards were originally known as The Cessnock/Kurri Kurri Small Business Awards and started in September 1993, covering the businesses of the Cessnock Shire only.
Over the years they grew to encompass the Maitland and Dungog shires and became known as the Lower Hunter Business Excellence Awards.
In 2007 the awards were renamed the Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards and were opened to businesses throughout the Hunter region.
The Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards are accepting entries for the 2015 presentation, which is to be held in September.
The awards are in their 22nd year and are open to businesses across 21 categories, including the highly coveted Business of the Year award.
Morpeth business Cupz N’ Crepes has won the hospitality category for the past three years.
Entries for the Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards must be received by Friday, July 24.
