Australia’s youngest Paralympic medallist went into the Newcastle Knights sheds with East Maitland Griffins junior Robbie Rochow to meet a few of the players.
The 16-year-old was pictured with outgoing Knights skipper Kurt Gidley, former Australian captain Danny Buderus and flying winger Akuila Uate while playmaker Jarrod Mullen even snapped a selfie with Elliott on his own phone.
Magpies inspired
The inspiration behind the Maitland Magpies first win of their return National Premier League season may come in the form of a handwritten note.
“Sometimes succeeding is more than just winning. It is doing your best for a reason and today there is no better reason.”
It was left for the first grade squad in the dressing sheds at Cooks Square Park by the Magpies under-14 side.
Oscar Meyn plays in that junior team, which is coached by senior veteran Justin Broadly, and on Sunday the club hosted a charity fundraiser day.
The event was in honour of Meyn’s late younger brother, Harry, and Harry’s House which has been established to support families battling health issues.
It may have been the spark which got the Magpies over the line – a 3-0 victory against Charlestown City Blues – and off the bottom of the competition ladder.
Maitland Rams midfielder Pat Magann has helped the Australian Schoolboys hockey side to a 4-3 victory over Belgium in the final of the Four Nations tournament in Germany this week.
Olsen's brush with fame
Hunter Valley cricketer Drew Olsen is enjoying a season away playing in England and recently rubbed shoulders with a famous fast bowler.
Olsen, located in Northamptonshire with Old Cricket Club, crossed paths with Devon Malcom the other day and posted a happy snap on Facebook.
Apparently the former English quick, now 52, was due to be taking part in about 40 games this summer.
Stokes shows form
Still on cricket and ahead of the upcoming Ashes series England’s Ben Stokes has showed a bit of form with the fastest Test century scored at Lord’s followed by this unplayable in-swinger that dismissed New Zealand skipper Brendan McCullum for a golden duck.
