Planet Dungog Music Festival will be a celebration of the town’s resilience through the devastating impacts of the major natural disaster that hit the region last month.
Little more than a month ago, the storm that swept the region carried several homes off their foundations and through a raging torrent of floodwater, caused widespread chaos, significantly damaged infrastructure and took people’s lives.
The problems caused by the superstorm have remained through the weeks since, with many people still without a permanent place to live and with few possessions left.
It’s testament to the town that, despite the hardship Dungog residents continue to face, the Planet Dungog festival will be held this weekend.
The festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday and features a street concert, films, bush poetry and lives performances by folk, blues, jazz, rock and classical musicians.
The most quirky drawcard will be the screening of the last silent movie made in Australia. Kid Stakes was filmed in Sydney in 1927 and is based on the Fatty Fin comicstrips.
Events that are part of Planet Dungog will be spread across eight heritage venues throughout the town.
This will give people the chance to spend the day in Dungog and support local businesses that have weathered the natural disaster.
Importantly, the festival will raise much-needed funds for the Dungog Shire Community Centre welfare disaster fund.
So if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, get to Dungog and support a community doing its best to pick itself back up after a hard fall.
