Half of the ticket sales from the opening night of the theatre group’s production of Alice in Wonderland (and back again) will go toward Matthew’s drama tour, which will be conducted through The Hunter School of Performing Arts, where he is a student.
Matthew, 16, has a diverse palette for cinema and stage. His favourite play is Shakespearean while his favourite movie is Schwarzeneggerean.
“My first performance was in Roald Dahl’s The Witches at Maitland Rep,” Matthew said.
“I won’t perform in Alice but I’ll be assistant director.”
Matthew said he believed the key to good acting was to perform in a way that stayed with the audience after the curtain falls.
“I think the context of your character is really important, I try to understand how they would think and feel,” he said.
Matthew’s trip will be in July 2016 and he will learn acting skills in a professional setting from those whose lives are dedicated to the pursuit.
The Repertory Theatre will run 10 performances of Alice between June19 and July 5.
Tickets are $17 and can be purchased on maitlandreptheatre.org.
