Whether they are memories of those who have died, or mementos of those who are living, hundreds of people have chosen to mark their skin on behalf of friend or family member.
Chloe White had a special quote tattooed on her thigh to mark the birth of her daughter Aaylah.
The tattoo says, “life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away”.
“I think it explains exactly what it means to me and why I have it,” she said. “All my tattoos have a meaning to me and this one’s especially for my little girl, Aaylah.”

Another Hunter resident, Tracey Evans, has her late sister Kelly tattooed on her arm.
The design is based on the last photograph ever taken of Kelly from November 2005 at Muswellbrook cup race day.
“She passed away on December 2, 2005, of an asthma attack,” Ms Evans said.
“We had to turn her life support off due to lack of oxygen to her brain.
“In saying that, she was a registered organ donor and was able to donate all her organs except for her lungs.”
The tattoo was designed so that when Ms Evans has her arm down by her side, Kelly’s eyes are looking out and keeping an eye on everything for her sister.
* Send in photographs of your tattoos, we want to know why you got them.
Some tattoos tell a story and some are just the remnants of a good time, either way we want to see them. Post them to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook with the #HunterInk. Or email your photographs to jessica.brown@fairfaxmedia.com.au and we will add your story to our Hunter Ink gallery.
