Ms Williams coaches children with additional needs and disabilities at Maitland Football For All. Her work provides a rare opportunity for children with disabilities to participate in team sports.
Ms Williams had worked as a special needs teacher in Hunter schools for the past nine years, but only began coaching football at the beginning of this year.
“The goal I had was to see them engaged and playing against standard football teams, which has been amazing for them,” Ms Williams said. “[The other teams] have been so supportive.”
Ms Williams will receive a coaching pack of balls, markers, bibs, a whistle, a polo shirt and cap in order to continue her coaching role at the club.
Organised and team sports have long been acknowledged as important in the development of young bodies and minds.
But Ms Williams said it was particularly important to foster opportunities for children with disabilities to participate.
“Most of these guys just want to get out there and have fun,” she said.
“The fitness factor is something that kids with disabilities often lack, but for them to be able to do it in their own way is incredibly important.
“A few of the kids have tried other football teams and just haven’t coped, so we provide the freedom for them to do it their own way and they do it well.”
Maitland Football for All was founded by Alex Threadgate and Alex Malam in October 2012 and experienced a groundswell of support from the community.
