In one of life’s cruellest blows, Lynn and Peter Pobjie have lost two children to cancer.
Aged just nine months, baby Brooke died of a rare cancer in 1992 and her brother Jonte “Snow” lost his battle with osteosarcoma two years ago aged 19 years.
In honour of their children the Pobjies, of Thornton, have registered a team – Team Snow – for this year’s Maitland Relay For Life.
“We never really wanted to be a part of it [the event] but now it’s time,” Mrs Pobjie said.
“For us it helps keep their [Brooke’s and Jonte’s] spirits alive and to also keep the hope alive that others don’t have to go through the same thing.
"This can happen to anyone unfortunately, but if we all keep doing this sort of thing [raising money for cancer research] there is hope.”
In a tribute to her brother last year, Marnie Pobjie, 15, described Jonte as loud and odd.
“But he was an awesome brother. He always smiled no matter what and whenever he smiled I couldn’t help but smile also,” Marnie wrote for the Maitland Mercury.
“We had our arguments, but he is my brother and I love him.”
The Maitland Relay For Life will be held at Maitland Sportsground on September 5 from 10am until 10pm.
