The arctic temperature reading had everyone talking, mostly because it didn’t seem to be that cold.
On Monday the Maitland Tourist Centre, where the reading was taken, confirmed the -8 temperature was an error.
The reading had been recorded incorrectly, then sent to organisations including the Bureau of Meteorology and Weatherzone.
“The reading was incorrect,” Maitland City Council’s communications team leader Chris Breaden said.
“It was actually about zero degrees on Sunday.”
Had the -8C been a legitimate reading it would have beaten the lowest recorded temperature for that month of -3.5 degrees in July 2002.
