Maitland City Council sent a letter to neighbouring business owners on July 2 to alert them that modified plans for the major redevelopment had been lodged and would be open for comment until August 6.
One of the changes, the letter noted, was a single-level David Jones department store and two “mini-major” stores in the space that had previously been earmarked for retail giant Myer.
“The modification of the proposed development is principally to accommodate the changes required as a result of the change in department store operator from Myer to David Jones,” the letter noted.
“Where Myer was originally proposed over two levels, David Jones have identified that a single level store on the new upper level will be more appropriate.
“As a consequence, the area currently approved as the lower level of the department store requires reconfiguration and will now provide for two mini-major tenancies and one additional specialty retail tenancy.”
But a Stockland spokesman would not confirm that David Jones officials had agreed, or were in talks, to open a store at the Green Hills site.
A David Jones spokeswoman said the company did not comment on real estate matters.
Myer Holdings Ltd announced in March that it would not proceed with plans for the Green Hills store after the company reported its net profit after tax had fallen by 23.1 per cent, to $62.2 million, in the second half of 2014.
At the time, the Mercury reported that Stockland would pursue another department store chain, other than budget stores such as Kmart, to fill the space that had been earmarked for Myer.
The revamped Stockland shopping centre will include Woolworths, Coles, Target,
Big W and more than 100 extra specialty stores.
It will also include a new garden courtyard and cafe area.
