For their annual performance, the cast and crew of Reamus Youth Theatre (the youth training division of Maitland Repertory Theatre) have explored William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
“We staged The Tempest last with virtually the same group of young people so we wanted to continue playing to their strengths with A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” director Dan Stranger said.
“We’ve got a lot of high school age kids in this group but that’s also balanced out by uni students, TAFE students, adults so it’s a good group to work with.”
Set in Athens, the play tells the tale of Theseus, his engagement to Hippolyta and a party staged in a fantastical place of wonder.
“This is one of Shakespeare’s more fantastical stories. A lot of his comedies are set in obscure European towns where Shakespeare himself probably never went, but in this one he invites magic into the theatre space and that’s truly exciting for this show.”
A Midsummer Night’s Dream opens at the Maitland Repertory Theatre on Friday night and runs until August 15.
