The 5917 engine from Lachlan Valley Railway will be on a journey from Sydney to Tamworth when it makes an overnight stop at Maitland on August 13.

“This engine has been a bit of a stalwart to the society,” Lachlan Valley Railway director John Healey said.

“It is special because this engine was saved from scrap by a syndicate of our members back in the early ’70s.

“Most of them were working on the railways at the time.”

When the 5917 was in service it was mostly used as a freight engine, but in August it will be a passenger service with 1930s vintage, open-windowed compartment carriages.

The train will arrive at Maitland Station about 3pm and will depart for Werris Creek on August 14 at 9.30am.

“We want people to come and enjoy the journey,” Mr Healey said.

“The reason I think people should come is because of the areas we are going through after Maitland.

“Scone, Muswellbrook, this part of the journey is just the most gorgeous countryside.

“It’s not just a journey for the steam heads.”

Along for the ride will be the driver, a fireman, engine fitters, train guards and carriage attendants for the full steam train experience.
