Aluminium smelting has been a part of Kurri Kurri and Weston for almost fifty years since production began in 1969.
“We are open to ideas,” Hydro managing director Richard Brown said.
The smelter operated under five business names: Australuco; Alcan; Capral; VAW; and Hydro.
It employed more than 500 employees during peak production and now it’s closed Hydro wishes to commemorate the history.
“Kurri Kurri is known for its murals, the BHP Newcastle site has been commemorated with sculptures, and other memorials around the region come in all shapes and sizes.
“We want the community to tell us what they think, so we can do something that resonates with former staff and their families.”
Ex-employees, their families and other community members are encouraged to call 1800 066 243 or email community.kurri@hydro.com with their ideas.
Feedback is open until the end of August 2015 so ideas can be considered and planning can commence.
Hydro plans to redevelop areas of land on the smelter site and the 2000 hectare buffer zone under a master plan.
The proposal includes 175 hectares of residential land, 200 ha of business and industrial area and bio-certification of about 1300 hectares of land that has endangered ecological communities.
