Employees who had tended to Maitland’s seniors with compassion and dignity for five, 10, 15, 20, 25 and even 30 years were awarded badges and ­certificates at a special ceremony.

Opal Aged Care regional manager Ann Knevitt presented the awards alongside facility manager Julie Hughes. Mrs Hughes too was recognised for her 30 years of service with the company.

About 30 employees and their families attended the day. 

Ms Knevitt said it was important to acknowledge and thank staff for their dedication.

“It’s just about appreciation,” she said.

The facility’s first night sister, Beverley Drew, was among those recognised for more than 30 years service.

“I only had two patients the first two nights and I was here by myself,” Mrs Drew said.

“Gradually it filled up.”

Reflecting on how her role, the home and activities in the facility had changed during her time there, Mrs Drew said she has never stopped learning and developing.

“We introduced computers – that was a learning curve.” 

“I know all I need to know, anyway,” she said.
