The All Saints College, St Mary’s Campus, Maitland, year 11 student has rallied her fellow blood bank ambassadors to take part in a new push to replenish stocks following a late peak in the flu season.
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs at least 100 donors to replace those – about 28 per cent – who have cancelled appointments because of cold and flu symptoms.
“My nan passed away because she needed a certain blood type and she couldn’t get enough of it so that has always stayed with me,” Hannah said.
Some of Australia’s best-known chefs – including Donna Kay, Kylie Kwong, Matt Moran and Neil Perry – have also jumped on board the biscuit wagon.
“I donate blood because in all community aspects I want to give back,” Jessica Mounser said.
“I’ve always been like that and also my mother had heart surgery and can’t donate anymore, so I want to donate on her behalf.
“I understand the anxiety connected with giving blood, but it’s a safe procedure and one donation saves three lives. Knowing something that really helps you get over the fear.”
Every donation helps to save three lives including the lives of cancer patients, road trauma victims, those with blood disorders, unborn babies and mothers during childbirth.
“A lot of people are afraid of giving blood but there are people out there who don’t have a choice, they have conditions that are life threatening,” Vinette de Klerk said.
