Born full-term on her expected due date, tiny Isabella died when the placenta erupted during the final 20 minutes of her mother’s labour.
But thanks to a revolutionary piece of equipment, Ashley and Lauren Clarke were able to take their daughter home to spend precious hours with those who loved her, including big sister Yasmine.
This week, on the first anniversary of Isabella’s birth and death, the Clarkes, of Blackalls Park have donated a cuddle cot to Maitland Hospital to help other grieving parents.
Valued at $4300, the piece of machinery keeps the deceased baby’s body cool so it doesn’t deteriorate.
“Being able to bring her home, even for that short time, meant everything to us,” Mrs Clarke said.
“I don’t think I could have left the hospital without bringing her home and I don’t think I’d be able to talk about her in this way if we weren’t given that opportunity.
“It is still terrible and horrible, but it was just beautiful to say our goodbyes in our own way, not in a hospital or a morgue.”
The donation was made possible by The Australian Street Federation – Newcastle Nationals Committee.
“We like the fact we can help other people and that Isabella is doing something for others,” Mrs Clarke said.
“It’s not for everybody, others may not want to take this option, but we want the cuddle cot to be there if someone does.”
