The All Saints College, St Joseph’s Campus, Lochinvar, student has rallied her school friends to engage their moral compass and lace it up to raise money for homeless youth.
An initiative of Youth Off The Streets, the #laceitup campaign serves as a daily reminder that, for some, shoes are a luxury and there are thousands of young people battling street life every day.
“I thought this would be a really good opportunity for everyone to do something to help young people living on the streets,” Lyvia, 14, said.
“Young people like us have it so good but there are so many others who don’t have what we have.
“It would be so horrible to be homeless and I just feel so fortunate and lucky for what I have.”
The school will end its contribution to the #laceitup campaign with a winter sleep out in the school hall on Friday night.
“Not everyone has the same privileges these students have so it’s important for them to understand that,” the school’s ministry coordinator Erin McCort said.
“They also need to be aware of how important it is to stand in solidarity for those less fortunate than ourselves and to work out what we can to help them.”
More than 47,000 young people - under the age of 25 – are homeless making up to 48 per cent of the homeless population.
