Maitland Regional Art Gallery’s latest program is called conversations – art and dementia – a free event open to everyone in the community.
Tours of the gallery’s exhibitions and the historic gallery building (Maitland’s original 1910 technical college) are part of the experience to help spark memories.
“The old timber floors, the wooden hand rail, the staircase – it’s all really important to help bring back memories for people with dementia,” gallery deputy director Brigette Uren said.
“It will remind many people about attending school as a child or being a student in the technical college days.
“It is a sensory experience.”
A dignified cup of tea in fine bone china, a slice of home made cake and a social gathering accompanies the experience.
Tours are guided by a trained facilitator who delivers a program which encourages discussion, self expression, stories and laughter, inviting everyone to express their thoughts and emotions.
Tours are held Tuesday and Thursday at 10.30am. Bookings are essential and groups are for a maximum of 10 people. Contact the gallery on 4934 9859 or visit 230 High Street.
