The one-stop health shop will fill the void Best & Less left at the corner of Bulwer and High streets and shows faith in The Levee precinct’s retail pull.

“The plans for The Levee form a really good concept, even if there have been some issues around timing,” pharmacist and property purchaser Sangita Shah said.

“The surrounding suburbs are growing and expanding too, which gives me ­confidence.”

Ms Shah owns the Maitland High Street Pharmacy and expects to move into the new shop in October, which at 750 square metres is three times the size of the old shop.

“We’re looking seriously at offering health services like physios and GPs,” Ms Shah said.

Customers at the pharmacy are urged to provide feedback on what services they would like. 

Ms Shah’s plans are yet to be finalised but there’s provision for four or more GPs.

“People are struggling to get into GPs all the time,” Ms Shah said. 

“That lack of GPs is something I want to change especially when people’s needs are often quite urgent.”

The property was listed through Tony Cant Real Estate Maitland under expressions of interest and was purchased for an undisclosed sum.

The purchase ends speculation over the future use of the property and even rumour it would become a McDonalds restaurant.

“We’re excited to see some activity in The Levee of this magnitude and we think it’s a good thing for The Levee and the Maitland CBD,” Tony Cant commercial property executive Michael Maffey said. 

Vacant shops have become rarer Mr Maffey said since February.

“There aren’t many vacant spaces left and it’s an indication that central Maitland is kicking.”

Settlement was finalised last week and renovations now start on the new store which will operate as a Mega Save Chemist.

It is one of two pharmacy’s Ms Shah owns in the Maitland CBD with the other is the Priceline Pharmacy in Pender Place.
