At a time when even modest suburban homes sell for $1 million and above in Newcastle, this mansion could be considered a bargain.
“It’s a reasonable price particularly when it would be $2.8 million if it was Sydney,” PRD Nationwide’s East Maitland franchise principal Rhonda Nyquist said.
“That’s the luxury of living in this area, you can afford some beautiful homes.”
There was considerable excitement around the property that was firmly on many people’s lotto wish list.
The two-storey, four-bedroom, two-bathroom home on 1500 square metres of land had received a lot of love from vendors Hardy and Jacqueline Gitzel, who undertook massive renovations to the property.
The home was extensively marketed but withdrawn from auction.
The Maitland-born buyer, who wished to remain anonymous, negotiated the sale via private treaty last week from his Dubai base.
While the property has appropriate zoning for use as a B&B, it’s understood Verona will be a family retreat on trips back to home soil.
“It’s always a fairly extensive campaign going to auction,” Mrs Nyquist said.
“Verona as on the wish list for many people, but when you reach that upper price range it does limit the market.”
