“It’s no use going back to yesterday,” wrote Lewis Carroll 150 years ago in Alice in Wonderland, “because I was a different person then.”

So on Saturday, in celebration of the beloved children’s novel’s milestone, the Metford Public School Fete will tip its Mad Hat to Carroll’s magical universe from noon to 4pm.
Parents can enter the millinery competition to help them look the part for the school hall’s Mad Hatter Tea Party, where students’ portraits will be available for sale.
A twirling teacup merry-go-round, face painting, paper craft and laser tag will contribute to the festivities, as will “old favourites” such as the chocolate wheel and coin toss.
The fete, teacher-librarian Susan Wright said, would not be possible without an “entire school effort with huge community involvement”.
They hope to raise enough money to update the school hall’s audio visual system to expose students to a new way of learning.
“It’ll make it so much more accessible,” Ms Wright said.
“[It’ll be] visually exciting and make it seem more real for them as well.”
