McKinnon sustained a spinal injury in March 2014 and his painstaking recovery has become an inspiration. While Maitland mayor, Cr Peter Blackmore will cut the ribbon, McKinnon will open the festivities.
A free family fun day will follow the opening and includes a huge jumping castle and jet chairs, a petting zoo, face painting, live music and giveaways.
“Wallis Creek is a growing family-oriented community in Gillieston Heights and the addition of the very first park is a fantastic milestone for the whole community,” Cr Blackmore said.
The Wallis Creek community park and playground will be opened on October 18.
The family fun day will run from 10am to 2pm.
“We invite everyone in the Gillieston Heights area and surrounding suburbs to come and enjoy our family fun day to celebrate the official opening of the new park
at Wallis Creek,” Walker Corporation director of master planned communities Chad Walker said.
“The day will be packed full of free family friendly activities for kids of all ages.”
McKinnon’s walking video
On Saturday Alex McKinnon posted a video on Instagram of himself walking with the assistance of a harness and frame.
“This week I had a really good week up on the Gold Coast and saw some improvement it the ability to lock out my knees,” he wrote on the post.
“In this small clip I am in a harness and using a walking frame with the assistance of a trainer to swing my legs through.
“Though the ability of my legs being able to lock out continually over a long period and not tire is a big improvement for me as I couldn’t do this before.”
