Roads and Maritime Services is investigating whether to drop the 100km/h speed limit by 20km/h on a stretch of road near Turners Road and McFarlanes Road.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald met with residents at Millers Forest last week and said the result of the RMS investigation would be available soon.
“I’ve got no problem with it coming down from 100 to 80,” he said.
The investigation comes after Millers Forest Progress Association president Selby Green wrote a letter to NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay expressing safety concerns that were shared by nearby residents.
The major concern was that the 100km/h speed limit made it unsafe for residents of the 23 homes along the strip to turn in and out of their driveways.
“Commonsense is not prevailing,” Mr Green said.
One resident told the Mercury that she 35 cars past her one day before there was a safe enough gap to drive onto Raymond Terrace Road.
Another resident, Greg Taylor, said there had been several bad crashes on the road during the 30 years he had lived there.
One of the most recent fatal crashes happened in October, 2013, which claimed the life of a 19-year-old P-plater.
“You might not see [a crash] for 12 months, then you’ll get a couple in a row,” Mr Taylor said.
“It seems to be getting worse because of the volume of traffic.
“There’s a bus stop in front of my place and it’s 100km/h.
“The problem is, where the bus stops, a car turning right into Turners Road would have to stop and the cars behind it undertake him and go straight past my front fence.”
Raymond Terrace Road is a commonly used link road between the M1 Pacific Motorway and Raymond Terrace.
