The three-day event organised by Screen Hunter for November, is all about films based on true stories.
“Films based on true stories are films that usually provoke the audience to think more deeply about subject than say a fictional Hollywood blockbuster,” Screen Hunter manager Annette Hubber said.
“The Real Film Festival screens films that initiate social change and that stay in the viewers conscience long after the screening.
“Real stories have a truth and power that gives the film real substance.”
Organisers are calling for more entries into the short film competition and Ms Hubber said homegrown filmmakers have plenty of inspirational locations to choose from.
“No other region in Australia offers the greatest range of cinematic locations within and 2.5 hour radius than Maitland and the greater Hunter region,” she said.
“Obviously the Maitland Gaol has featured prominently in several TV series, feature films music videos and television commercials,” she said.
“The picturesque township of Morpeth, the mighty Hunter River and its collections of distinctive bridges.
“Maitland is also home to an impressive number of historic buildings and architecture.”
Winner of last year’s open category was Jonathan Williams from Singleton.
His film called The Social Addict was about a social network addiction which took over a young man’s life.
“The festival provides local creative people, film lovers and filmmakers an opportunity to have a film festival of national significance right in their own backyard,” she said.
“It’s an event the community can proudly call their own.”
The Real Film Festival runs from November 27 to 29 in Newcastle.
