The man was hit in the head with the weapon on Saturday.
Just before 9pm the offender – who was armed with a machete and had his face concealed – entered a tobacconist at a shopping centre at Raymond Terrace.
Police have been told the 63-year-old employee grabbed the man and a struggle ensued, during which the worker was struck in the head with the machete.
The armed man attempted to open the till before leaving empty-handed.
Emergency services were called and officers from Port Stephens Local Area Command arrived a short time later, securing a crime scene.
The injured man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Maitland Hospital, where he received stitches.
The armed man has been described only as wearing dark clothing, with a dark t-shirt covering his face.
Inquiries are continuing.
