Emergency services were called to the intersection of Metford and Raymond Terrace roads about 12.45pm on Monday to reports of a car fire.
The silver Holden Commodore was engulfed in flames when emergency services arrived at the scene.
A young man in his late teens was caught in the car when the fire started but managed to pull himself free.
He suffered burns to his right calf.
Paramedics treated the teenager at the scene before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital.
Raymond Terrace Road remained closed for about an hour as a team of three fire engines worked to extinguish the blaze.
Maitland City Council staff, who were working nearby at the time of the incident, helped to secure the scene and direct traffic.
According to witnesses the fire sparked up several times before NSW Fire and Rescue crew managed to douse the flames.
The Holden was gutted by the fire.
