The first step in their program has taken place. Maitland City Council has provided them with a new bench in a perfect spot in Maitland Park, near the cenotaph.
“In these days of frenzied activity, we believe there is a need for more quiet places in our parks where people can break away from noise and bustle and sit by themselves for a few moments,” Maitland Region Suicide Prevention Network chairman Steve Schumacher said.
“Setting up benches with plaques costs up to $2500, so benches we can erect will depend on what funding we have.
“But we are thrilled with this bench and Maitland City Council did a great job putting it in, surrounded by plants that will provide seclusion when they grow bigger.
“We approached council with the idea, suggesting five sites and Council chose this one, overlooking the cenotaph.
“Sometimes people find it necessary to stand back a bit from the problems of everyday life and just find a quiet spot where they sit for a bit and think. Places like this could save a life.
“One our network’s aims is to have a bench in a secluded place in every park in Maitland, but we don’t receive funding, so any future places like this would depend on what funding we could secure.”
