A $1 million reconstruction of Redbill Drive has begun in a move residents said was long overdue.
“I call it the worst road in Maitland,” north ward councillor Philip Penfold said.
“The residents have put up with it for too long.”
He said the road has needed work for more than five years but that flood damage to other roads in the city had caused the delay in work.
“Other priorities have been in the way,” Cr Penfold said.
“It’s not a road that most of Maitland [people] notice but we are mindful of the needs out there.”
The road has been the subject of complaints since crash claimed the life of a man in 2011.
The accident occurred at the Woodberry Drive intersection, where the work has started.
Work has begun at the eastern end of Redbill Drive, with the reconstruction stretching for the entire length of the road.
Cr Penfold said Redbill Drive was one of a number of road in Woodberry that were being repaired.
“Woodberry Road is also in need of a significant amount of work,” he said.
Improvements to the recreation reserve in Woodberry are also being carried out at a cost of $50,000.
The work includes a revamp of the skate park and other structures at Fred Harvey Sport Centre.
“We need a greater investment in sport and recreation,” Cr Penfold said.
He has also requested work to be done to the BMX track behind the reserve.
The Redbill Drive reconstruction is scheduled to be finished in June.
