Tasha Winsor Okeefe, a member of the 530 running club, uses the park for weekend runs, mid-week fitness and training.
“We run there every week,” she said.
“I thought it was time to give it a go and clean it up.”
The clean-up is one of many registered sites for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday March 6.
Ms Winsor Okeefe has put the call out for volunteers, including other running groups, to join the Walka clean-up.
“I think the day motivates people to get up and clean up,” she said.
“In Maitland, Walka is significant to a lot of people, so I hope people will join.”

In 2015, more than 535,000 volunteers removed an estimated 14,000 tonnes of rubbish from 6890 sites across Australia.
For those who don’t want to get their hands dirty, Clean Up Australia Day has a donation option.
Called YOU, the donation program allows residents to choose the rubbish item that annoys them most and allocate their money towards development of a program that focuses on that item.
To become a YOU donor text CLEAN to 0437 371 371 or follow the prompts on the website.
