It was that first dance that kindled the magic of a first kiss.
And the Woodville couple visited the club again this week, to relive their Valentine’s Day memories in its happy surroundings.
Though the McKimm’s will be away on Sunday, Valentine’s Day, their thoughts will still be at the club that means so much to them.
The couple married in 1972. Now the parents of two boys, they also have four grandchildren.
“I was only 17 and under age – drinking a lemon squash – when I met Graeme at Maitland District Leagues Club 45 years ago this Sunday,” Mrs McKimm said.
“I was with somebody else and so was Graeme.
“But he asked me to dance, his smile won me over and I liked his personality.”
“Cheryl was wearing a short skirt and she looked terrific,” Mr McKimm said.
“She was also a very good dancer and we had a great night.
“But we also found we were both from farming backgrounds and we shared the same moral standards.”
Neither of them can remember the music they danced to, but said it was a “waltzy-type dance.”
“In those days, nobody commemorated Valentine’s Day or gave presents or flowers,” Mr McKimm said.
“Cheryl and I don’t give each other gifts either, but our kids celebrate the big day for us.
“In any case, you could say Cheryl and I remember our first meeting every Friday – because we come to the club once a week.
“And we can’t walk in without saying thank you to St Valentine, on whose special day we met so long ago.”
