Thornton had Kurri Weston in trouble at 6-109 before Michael Heinrich (97) and Steve Abel (77) rescued the innings with a sixth-wicket stand of 135 runs.
The visitors also travelled at a run a ball during the last 30 overs and haven given themselves every chance of holding onto second position on the Maitland and District Cricket Association first grade competition.
Thornton will be without the services of opening bowler Chris Archer (wedding) as well as recognised batsmen Matt Gabriel (holidays) and Jolyian May (unavailable).
Jono Momsen, Jamie Krake and David Seers are the replacements.
Over at Lorn Park and third-placed Western Suburbs face a similar task to Thornton against two-time defending premiers Northern Suburbs.
The home side posted 9-293 from their 80 overs on the first day’s play, but the Plovers welcome back damaging opening batsman Michael Rees.
And in the other round 13 encounter, front runners City United will resume at 1-53 in need of 183 for victory against Raymond Terrace at Jack Collins Oval.
Play starts at 12.30pm.
Eastern Suburbs have the bye.
