Maitland Council officially adopted the response at last Tuesday’s council meeting and the feedback was lodged with the Local Government Boundary Commission late last week.
”I would like to emphasise to the community that council’s position remains that Maitland would continue to be a strong stand alone entity and that this model best meets the needs of both council and the community,” the mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore said.
“In spite of this position we are still faced with the possibility of a merger with Dungog. It was in the interest of our community that council undertake a genuine consideration of this proposal.
“If a merger were to proceed, council must have a voice in this process in order to best represent Maitland.
“A successful merger will only be possible if Maitland and Dungog councils, our communities, and the state government all work together.”
