The AMP Cancer Council Pro Bono Program is a joint initiative between AMP Advisory Group and the Cancer Council to assist cancer patients, and those close to them, in dealing with the financial impact of diagnosis of and treatment for cancer.
The Maitland-based advisory group has been recognised as helping with the largest number of pro bono cases since the initiative was launched in 2010. The group also recently won an AMP award for their work.
“Being able to give back is something the team at Advisory Group is passionate about and as a professional organisation we have a responsibility to deliver public service to those in the community that are in need,” CEO Brad Luke said.
The work that the advisory group does makes a real difference to individuals and their families whose lives are touched by cancer. It also clearly demonstrates the value of financial advice within the Hunter community.
The client and family may not know about life insurance attached to super, or their ability to get early release of super in cases of terminal illness.
The advisory group helps with budgeting and cash flow, helps arrange insurance claims, and deals with credit card payment issues.
“We are able to provide an opportunity for those affected by cancer to get financial advice that may not have been available to them previously, and it is great to take the weight off the shoulders of the family who otherwise need to be focusing on caring and attending to someone who is a cancer sufferer,” Mr Luke said.
AMP partnered with the Cancer Council in 2010 to help cancer patients by providing expert and qualified financial advice that they might not otherwise be able to access – free of charge.
An Access Economics report for the Cancer Council showed that a cancer diagnosis could be financially devastating for a family.
It calculated the average cost of dealing with a cancer diagnosis could total as much as 3.9 times the annual household income.
The AMP pro bono initiative aims to restore some peace to the lives of people diagnosed with cancer during the difficult time.
According to AMP, almost 500 financial advisers from the company have offered services to help more than 2700 families affected by cancer across Australia in the past six years.
