Registered nurses Emma Clarke and Lee Stevens nominated and were selected to attend the Roundtable of Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety, a four day seminar held in Sydney over the Anzac Day long weekend.
The session was the first ever of its kind held in Australia, with 30 doctors, nurses and medical students in attendance.
Participants learnt about transparency, quality improvement, teamwork and assertiveness over the four days.
Ms Clarke said one of the highlights was being able to hear directly from patients and their families about their experiences in hospitals.
“It was really good to hear first hand from the perspective,” she said.
“Its easy to get caught up in daily routine, you forget that some people have never been through the doors of a hospital before.
“It gave us good ideas on how we can improve on our service.”
Ms Clarke said she applied to take part in the program as she is passionate about what she does and always looks for ways to improve the service and patient safety.
She said she left the roundtable “brimming with excitement” about what she had learnt, and will work with Ms Stevens to debrief and come up with a plan to introduce the ideas to the hospital.
“It has given me drive and motivation,” she said.
“Its inspired me, I feel empowered.”
