The iconic Old George and Dragon Restaurant in Melbourne Street, East Maitland will be auctioned on Thursday May 12 at Fort Scratchley.
It is with a heavy heart owner Jenni Nichols is parting with the business but she said a change in vocation was calling.
“I’ve had an absolute ball being here with fantastic customers sharing birthdays, proposals and anniversaries but it’s time to move on,” Ms Nichols said.
Ms Nichols is the property’s second owner in 34 years with previous owners, the Morphy family, operating the business for 27 years.
Built in 1837, the inn was granted the state’s fourth liquor licence. From 1937 to 1977 the Robinson family held the licence with Mrs Dorothy Robinson the licensee for 30 years. The licence was then moved to the newly built tavern at Green Hills (now The George Tavern).
The old bar and dining rooms were converted into a restaurant, which is still trading.
