The Griffins dropped back after failing to register a win in the first four rounds of the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League B-grade season.
But thanks to a bye and their win they now sit in fifth spot on the ladder with four points just behind Dungog which has five points from its two wins and a draw.
Dungog atoned for their unexpected draw against Woodberry last week, with a 28-10 win against Singleton at Pirtek Park.
The Warriors were not able to capitalise on weight of possession in the first half because of dropped ball.
The difficulties retaining ball had them camped on their own line but they only conceded the one try.
A second sin-binning by a Singleton player allowed the Warriors to capitalise in the final 20 minutes to run our 18-point winners.
Playing at home Abermain Hawks could not match second-placed Stockton, falling 30-8.
Woodberry had the bye.
Carrington lead C-grade with an unbeaten record after five rounds. They defeated third-placed Kotara 44-20 on Saturday and appear to be a level above their competition.
Paterson River showed they have plenty of scoring potential with four tries against Windale on Saturday.
However, defensive lapses cost them dearly with the undefeated Windale running out 38-20 winners.
Try scorers for Paterson were Tyrone Smith, Matthew Roberts, Dylan Young and Joshua Murdoch.
Fullback Jay Smith converted two of four shots on goal and is third on the competition points tally with 32 from his four games, 10 behind leader Billy Greentree, from Tea Gardens.
Paterson are fifth on equal points with University of Newcastle in fourth on the ladder.
In B-grade, Raymond Terrace cemented themselves in the top three with a 28-16 win against Morisset under lights at Lakeside Oval on Friday night.
The win takes Terrace’s record to three wins and a draw on equal points with Fingal Bay. Wallsend Maryland leads the table with four wins.
Thornton-Beresfield got their season back on track with a 46-22 hammering of Glendale at Lindsey Oval on Saturday.
The victory lifts them to top spot on the ladder with three wins from five games a superior points differential from second-placed Windale on four points.
The previously undefeated Swansea has been promoted to C-grade and plays its first game in the new competition next week against Woodberry.
