Born in a barn and raised in the Tarkine rainforest, Taylor earned a degree from the University of Sydney in anthropology – the study of cultures.
But, after winning the 2013 Bluesfest busking competiton, she threw herself headlong into her music and herself – determined to see it out to the end.
Now she’s touring with her debut album Elemental, a reference to her enduring connection to the natural world.
In the opening track, Judge, her raspy, dark voice plays over a jazzy finger-clicker.
The centre-piece My Mother, The Mountain is intensely intimate, mournful and rich.
But, moments later on Dead to Me you hear gnash of an outlaw, defiantly snarling along to something Danzig would be proud of.
Catch Claire Anne Taylor at the Junkyard from 8.30pm.
