Maitland council has decided to give the project a six-month trial in the city’s heart and farmers couldn’t be happier.
With rising costs and market prices slashing the benefits of trucking produce to Sydney, our farmers need a viable alternative to sell their food for a fair price.
It will now be up to Maitland shoppers to show their support for farmers with their wallets. If they do, this market is likely to become a permanent fixture on the calendar and achieve long-term success.
After the overwhelming success of the pumpkin stall in March it was clear that Maitland people want fresh produce and they want to support local farmers.
But it’s also become apparent that our busy lifestyles don’t allow us the freedom of driving around to all of the roadside stalls so we can fill our weekly vegetable quota with produce that has been grown in our own backyard.
That’s why the concept of a produce market, where several local producers will be in the same spot, is sure to be a thriving success.
Food is a great way to unite the community and help people develop relationships. According to some experts, food is also a great way to improve your relationships and find common ground with others.

Central Maitland is in an exciting phase of its life. There’s a huge focus on renewal and a consumer demand for natural products that’s seeing an eclectic mix of stores set up shop.
If we’re serious about having great things at our doorstep then we need to do our part and throw our weight behind them. Otherwise they will disappear.
Let’s embrace this new phase and make a few changes to our own habits so we can fill out plates with wholesome, local goodness.
You won’t get much fresher than a crop of sweet potato that has been pulled out of the ground just before the farmer leaves for the market.
So no matter whether you’re a turnip fan, love your cauliflower or crave a locally-grown beetroot, the monthly market will have your local produce needs covered.
