Ryan Broadley was man-of-the-match scoring two goals and having a hand in the Magpies other goal.
Broadley got the Magpies on the board when he tapped in a Blake Thompson penalty saved by Bears keeper Benn Kelly.
Kelly was lucky not to be red-carded after bringing Broadley down in the second-half. Dean Heffernan converted the subsequent penalty.
Broadley’s second goal was set up by Ben Martin.
Magpies assistant coach Reece Thompson said the Magpies moved into third place on the ladder after results went their way on Sunday.
“Magic and Valentine had a 3-all draw and Edgeworth thrashed Charlestown City Blues 5-1, so that moves up to third,” he said.
Thompson said while there was no shortage of motivation going into a derby, a comment from the Bears before last year’s second derby had been used by the Magpies.
“There was a comment out of the Bears, ‘You look at teams that you have to beat and have to get three points against and this is one of those teams’, which did get to us,” Thompson said.
Bears coach Trevor Morris he was very disappointed with the result and that it could have been worse as they were very lucky the Kelly wasn’t sent off for his challenge on Broadley.
“Their send-off was very soft, but those decisions are out of our hands,” Morris said.
“We were second best all day. They were the better team all day.
“I’m very disappointed. We trained exceptionally well on Friday night, we had a game plan and I felt very good pre-game as it looked like everyone was up for it.
“Unfortunately, it went out the window after about 10 minutes.
“Inability to keep the ball, inability to make forward passes and individual errors were too high they’re all signs that our confidence is down.
One positive for the Bears was the debut of 18-year-old midfielder Isaac Peek and fellow youngster left fullback Lachlan Rowe. “Isaac was outstanding, he was a standout for us,” he said.
