On Thursday at 5.20pm Cessnock District Rescue Squad, police and paramedics were called to a person trapped in a motor vehicle on Old North Road in the Hunter Valley. The vehicle had left the road and collided with a tree.
On arrival at the scene emergency services found the 30-year-old male driver trapped inside his ute which was resting on its side, hard up against the tree.
With limited space to work due to the damaged vehicle, and the driver being suspended inside the car via the seatbelt, it was a very delicate extrication and took several hours.
The vehicle was stabilised and paramedics monitored the patient while the team worked to free him.
More than two hours later the driver was cut free.
He was removed from the vehicle and flown by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.
The man remains in the hospital in a stable condition. The cause of the crash is unknown.
