The hand-built weatherboard house farmer John Wright was raised in went up in flames on Monday afternoon, minutes after smoke was seen pouring out of the meter box.
His great-niece Josie grabbed her 18-month-old daughter Ava and escaped as the inferno engulfed the Hinton Road home.
All of their possessions - including family photographs that have hung on the wall for many decades - went up in flames.
"We're devastated, but it could have been a lot worse," Mr Wright said.
"We're grateful nobody lost their life.
"Our history has gone up in a few minutes."
Mr Wright's great-grandfather Thomas Wright built the house 90 years ago and raised his family there.
Mr Wright grew up in the house and lived there until a year after he was married.
Then he moved next door into a newly-built house.
"I spent 25 years of my life there, I have many memories of my mother and father and my sister Mary and brother Tom in that house."
A string of precious family photographs of his great-grandfather, grandfather and photos of his parent's wedding were lost.
"Some of those photographs would have been hanging on the wall for 80 or 90 years," Mr Wright said.
"I didn't have copies of the ones I should have."
The house, which is owned by Mr Wright and his nephew, was not insured.
Firefighters worked to stop the blaze from spreading to a hay shed, Mr Wright's millet workshop and his home.
At one stage four fire crews were working to contain the blaze.
Earlier, Raworth man Alex Carter, 24, saw the fire as he was driving past with his partner Elise Passmore, who is a registered nurse.
“There was an irrigation spray at the back of a tractor and me and two other gentlemen grabbed it and directed the stream of water at the house [until emergency services arrived],” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Carter said, Ms Passmore helped the occupants of the house, who had escaped the building.
