Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore did the honours of opening the exhibition with Courage to Care chairman Andrew Havas OAM.
Courage to Care is a travelling exhibition and educational outreach program, featuring Holocaust survivors as living historians recounting their rescue stories.
The exhibition highlights historical acts of courage in order to create an understanding of how everyone has the ability to stand up to racism and discrimination.
Woodberry resident Dawn Field was recognised as the Maitland local hero.
Aunty Dawn is an Aboriginal elder who has focused most of her life to delivering key community outreach projects for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents.
Holocaust survivor John Grushka, who lived in Maitland for almost 50 years after the war was also present.
The exhibition, which runs until July 17, is open to the public during gallery hours.
