Mikayla and Seth Harris, of Thornton, are the toast of their school and the Hunter Bowman Archery Club after adding the national titles to their state title won earlier this year at Maitland.
Mikayla won the junior bowhunter recurve championship and Seth won the junior bowhunter compound championship.
To win they had to accumulate scores shooting 112 arrows a day at multiple targets around a field course, which tested their accuracy, distance judgement and endurance.
You quickly realise how exhausting shooting 112 arrows in a day can be after watching Mikayla draw back her bow and holding the arrow in place for a photograph.
“You really feel sore by the end of the day, but I love it. The people involved are just so much fun,” Mikayla said.
It was the youngsters first attempt at the national titles, but they both managed to break records over five days of competition, and they have now set their sights on the world titles at Wagga Wagga in September.
The sport is a family affair, with dad Bryan also claiming a title in his division and mum Tanla third in her category.
Seth said the decision to take up archery came after his mother wanted him to find a sport and a family friend suggested the sport.
“It was supposed to be dad and me, but we all got involved and it’s great fun.”
Twenty-one Hunter Bowman took part in the Australia titles, with 16 of them winning medals including Australian titles to the Harris siblings and Aiden Young.
Gold medal winners were Tilly White, Shirlene Fulton, Aiden Young, Sindy Avard and Bryan Harris.
Silver winners were David and Julie Morrissey, Libby White and Nathan Butterfield.
Tanla Harris and Tracy Hickey won bronze.
