You can’t crush an entrepreneurial spirit even in the middle of winter. During school holidays, I’ve seen lemonade stalls, second-hand toys and used clothing at bargain prices. Marketing may be adhoc and customers thin on the ground but the proprietors remain undaunted. Parents rejoice at hours of screen-free entertainment, well, at least until the Facebook campaign starts.
Speaking of indomitable spirit and success, congratulations to finalists in the Hunter Business Awards – we look forward to the announcement of winners on August 5. In the meantime, don’t forget to enter the Hunter Region Business Enterprise Centre Awards before July 29. In other member news, our treasurer, Greg Cox will be presenting on a secret many of us wish we knew - The Secrets of Property Success - at The Lucky Hotel on July 25.
At this month’s chamber meeting, we’re focusing on the building and construction industry with Daracon, a Hunter-based company delivering a wide range of civil construction projects across the region. It owns and operates Martins Creek Quarry, which has an approved expansion project in the pipeline. This project has been controversial locally but there’s always a different perspective.
There’s no doubt it will bring much needed jobs and investment to the district. Not to mention, Martins Creek Quarry product has been an invaluable and accessible source of materials needed for urgent roadworks following the April 2015 super storm. We invite you to join us for lunch this Thursday at Best Western Hunter Gateway with Adam Kelly from Daracon and Brett Peterkin for Martins Creek Quarry Community Consultative Committee.
