Not even the sublime skills and hard running of Kookaburra Simon Orchard was enough for the Maitland Rams to deny a Norths outfit hellbent on claiming the minor premiership.

An unregistered player drama has sent the Hunter Coast Premier Hockey League competition ladder into turmoil, but Rams fans were there to watch one of world hockey’s best on his home field.
Orchard said it was a bit disappointing that he couldn’t help the Rams to a win, but he always loved returning home to Maitland and getting to have a game with his old teammates.
“I think the fans really appreciated it and it probably meant a fair bit to the younger blokes to play with someone who has international experience,” he said.
“I’m where some of these young guys want to get to and it would be great if they can achieve it.”
Rams coach Nathan Baker said it had been great for the club to have Orchard back.
“The boys loving having him around they can learn so much for him,” Baker said.
“Unfortunately, at times they can be in a bit too much awe and stand back and watch those terrific runs instead of running with him to be there in support.”
The Rams will know on Monday night whether they will play finals, when a decision on whether The Entrance will be docked 12 competition points for playing unregistered players will be finalised.
