Maitland City Council general manager David Evans is reminding residents that, unlike Cessnock and many other councils across the state, Maitland voters will not head to the polls this year.
“I can appreciate this is an unusual situation for council and for residents,” he said.
“Under normal circumstances we would be preparing for a council election in September, but because we are under merger consideration no election will take place this year.”
Fairfax Media previously reported that Maitland, Dungog Shire, Newcastle City and Port Stephens were among the councils that would not be included in the September 10 local government election because they are being considered as possible merger candidates.
The amalgamations have been proposed as part of the state government’s Fit for the Future local government reform package.
The government is considering possible mergers between Maitland and Dungog, Dungog and Port Stephens, and Newcastle and Port Stephens.
