Farley’s Marianne Harvey has been selected as one of 77 female scientists who will travel to Earth’s southernmost continent for the Homeward Bound project in December.
The three week mission will focus on climate, biological and earth system research.
Realising the trip would be the chance of a lifetime, Ms Harvey submitted an expression of interest to take part in the program.
She was accepted in an initial round of just 42 participants from around the world.
The mother of two runs her own consultancy business in the coal mines.
Having worked in the mining industry for more than 20 years, Ms Harvey said she will offer a different viewpoint on climate change and sustainability than some of the other scientists.
Ms Harvey said she also hoped to develop her leadership and communication skills through the program, with the goal of becoming a leader in creating a sustainable future for the planet.
It’s not all going to be smooth sailing though, after arriving in Ushuaia, Argentina Ms Harvey will jump on a boat the next day to make the long and cold journey down to the Antarctic.
But Ms Harvey said her preparation for the trip is going well, having already acquired an extra warm jacket to take.
“Everything is definitely on track, I’m getting very excited,” she said.
The trip also comes with a hefty price tag – $20,000 for the 20-day expedition.
Friday night’s event, Geo-artistry at the Gaol, is Ms Harvey’s major fundraiser for the trip.
The evening will involve an exhibition and auction of geologically-themed artwork.
Thirteen items will be auctioned and 20 will be on display. Pieces include original paintings, photography, textile art and jewelry.
The event follows Ms Harvey’s initial fundraiser Conversations at Blackbird.
The Geo-artistry event begins at 6pm, to purchase a ticket visit www.stickytickets.com.au/41104/geoartistry_at_the_gaol.aspx
